Challenges to Overcome
The biblical story of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and their brothers has many important lessons for those who see the need to restore the paths of God today. They faced many obstacles in fulfilling God’s purpose by rebuilding the temple of God at Jerusalem. Though they had received the permission and blessing of King Cyrus of Persia to do the work, the building project was hindered on many fronts. The political powers of the local area felt threatened and were constantly harassing the workers. Some of the workers became weary and turned to their own business interests. Others, seeing the enormity of the task before them and feeling discouraged by very real impediments, just wanted to give up. Others lamented that they were not able to replicate the majesty and beauty of the previous temple. Some wondered if the temple would ever be restored.
By My Spirit
And yet, God had a job that needed to be done, and he was going to work with those who were willing in rebuilding the temple. So God sent prophets to encourage the people to do the work and to give them a vision of the future. They needed to understand the importance of ‘doing the little things’ that would have major long-term effects. If God wanted his purpose accomplished he would supply his spirit to meet the challenge.
The Lord God provided the materials they needed in unexpected ways, and he defended them against their enemies – both within and without. Though this building project had languished for years, God was the source of encouragement and motivation to finally complete the work. We can consider the lessons learned in rebuilding the temple, as we apply ourselves to accomplishing the work God has given us to do in this time.
