God loves justiceThe Rule of Law

The rule of law has become a politically hot issue. But is the rule of law an issue that is important to God? Is it true that God loves justice? When it comes to our judicial proceedings there are accusations and counter-accusations of bribery and fraud, of political interference, and corrupt judges. It would seem at times that Isaiah understood the nature of our times when he wrote. “Justice is turned back, And righteousness stands afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.” Yet, we have hope in a Messiah who will bring equity and righteousness. His government will bring peace. How? With justice based on the rule of law.

An Everlasting Kingdom

As Creator, the Messiah has the right to judge the nations that he has made according to his standards of what is right. One of the Messiah’s roles will to be to establish and teach one standard, one law, thus bringing the rule of law to all nations. This basic premise was foundational in the nation of Israel, for there was one law for the citizen and the foreigner, one law for slave and free, one law for rich and poor. In this way the national covenant of Israel was unique.

No Partiality with God

This theme of justice for all was elaborated in the writings of Paul and Peter who made it clear that God shows no partiality or favouritism when he makes his judgments. God will establish justice for all by upholding the rights of the fatherless and the widow, the poor, and the oppressed. He will judge fairly and with mercy on those who embrace God’s standards of right living. But those who stubbornly refuse to obey the rule of law will receive the just reward of their evil deeds.

God Loves Justice

God is able to judge righteous judgment because he knows what is in our heart. He says judgment is “now” for those who have committed to living and walking with him. God’s hope is that we will embrace the divine rule of law – those principles that are virtuous, ethical, and moral. And he promises us the help to accomplish this purpose. We must love justice as God does. His instructions to his people Israel were clear — no bribes, no partiality, no perverting justice! There can be no hypocrisy in the lives of those who represent God and his rule of law. But there is a great reward for those who love justice as God loves justice. Do you know what it is?
